How can I repair the ring scratch on my xbox 360 game?

I tried to play my Modern Warfare 2 Xbox 360 game this evening and it didn't work. The xbox just displayed the message "open tray" when the game was inserted. The disk itself has a deep ring scratch halfway between the centre and the edge. What can I do? Where can I get the disk repaired? Will there be any lasting damage to my console?

The only thing you can really do is use something like disc doctor or whatever it was called, or I've heard of people using things such as toothpaste to try and clean the disc. But if the scratch is bad enough you can't repair it. And no there shouldn't be any damage to your console.

I'm not sure if anywhere like Gamestop would still try and clean discs, usually if a disc suffers from that sort of scratch from flipping your xbox it is beyond repairable. Someone else might know of somewhere that you can take it to, but the only place I know of to at least try would be Gamestop.

Yeah, you need to buy something to fix the scratch or take the game back if it's new enough.
This happened to our Rock Band game the first few days it was out!

putting toothpaste on the disc and then washing it off and drying it always works for me.

(i think the grits from the toothpaste fill the scratch enough to continue)

That used to be fine with ps2 games for me, but on xbox my POP wouldn't work properly, so I tried doing that (before you posted it :P ) and then well it just stopped working at all, the xbox says "open tray" as if the game isn't even working... :(

hmm... is that a disc or system issue at that point? it should know the tray is closed...

it does know that, it gives me the option to open the tray, as if there is no dvd inside. So it's definitely a disc issue...

Nah if it just keeps saying open tray then you have the infamous...wait for it...Open Tray error! Trying turning up the laser pot some, make sure it is closing all the way, replace the laser, and as a last ditch effort replace the dvd drive.

If it only happens with that dvd, well then disregard what I said. But I used to buy 360's all the time off ebay that had the "open tray" error or some variant for cheap, fix it and then sell it. The sammy drives had a little rubber band that was known to stretch and eventually the tray wouldn't open. I could make a killin off those, just disassemble the drive and dip the rubber band in hot/boiling water for a sec and it's good to go ;)
