32gb on your PSP? Yes please. UPDATE 10/9

Well, I have the parts ordered for my 32gb mod.

I'll be using a dual SDHC card adapter:

and 2 16gb SDHC cards:

Then taking out the UMD drive and internalizing the whole deal. It will take a little time to get the parts since I had to order the SD cards from the US (too friggin expensive here in Japan), and I'm waiting for the adapter which I ordered from the Japanese Amazon site.

Best thing about this mod is that if the file size restriction is lifted from the psp, then the 16gb cards can be replaced with 32gb ones giving me 64gb of storage :o .

Oh, and the total price tag for this is around $20 less than a sony 16gb pro duo card. SD FTW

EDIT 1: Well, the photofast adapter arived this morning. I took some pictures of it mounted on the outside of my psp, but didn't have time to upload them before work. Will get them up tonight. Overall, leaving it on the outside is not bad. If you did not want to modify your case at all to use this, it's not a bad option at all to use it as it was designed. I however want this to look as clean as possible, so the sucker's going in. Possibly tonight. Still have a week or more till my SD cards get in though

EDIT 2: Here's the pictures I promised... click for higher resolution. Again, keep in mind I only have my 2gb micro SD at the moment, and it had a game on it. That's why there's not a lot of space on the card.

EDIT 3: Ok, well, I got impatient and started hacking away. First time opening up a slim and let me tell you... a HECK of a lot easier than a fat. Did the case modifications and got everything settled in there. UMD drive now sitting in my spare parts drawer. I found another 2gb micro SD so now I've got those in the SD slots where my UMD drive used to be.

I'm now showing 3891mb from my 2 2gb micro sd's (transcend)

I know this mod has been done with 2 Adata 16gb SD cards with faster speeds than this. So I know I'm set.

I'll have some pictures up in the morning.

EDIT 4: Here's a photo I snapped really quick. I still need to mount the board inside the UMD area, so now it is just loose in there.

EDIT 5: Here's a couple better pictures of the setup. I have the board mounted with double sided tape now. The only difference from now to the final product is the SD cards...

I tested PSPFiler. Because there's no UMD drive anymore, the program stays at the "reading UMD" screen. You cannot browse past the MS. Honestly, it doesn't really matter for me because if I need to mess with files, especially my flash files, I will do it through USB.

EDIT 6: Still waiting for my 16gb cards. Ugh... they got to my house in the states, but my parents are forwarding them on to me here in Japan. Will be another week or so for those.

In any case, I had noticed a problem when I entered recovery mode. When the PSP rebooted after accessing recovery, it would take forever for the XMB to load. I'm talking a long time. Also, PSPFiler couldn't be used beyond the MS because it would get stuck reading the UMD.

Well it's FIXED! There's a small switch on the back of the motherboard that detects if a UMD is inserted. I had just ignored it before, but it was the source of all my problems. Opened the PSP back up, removed it, and bam... everything works perfect, including PSPFiler. Now I'm even more thrilled about my mod.

Nice, but it sucks you lose the umd drive. Yea yea you can hold a lot of games and movies on those cards but its still a nice thing to have. What are the write speeds?

I wouldn't care to have mine like that, but it would be an awesome project.

What kind of PSP will you be using this with? Slim/ Phat?

I just saw in the comments in the "Memory Prices on the Cheap" news article I wrote that someone mentioned this. I would be all for something bulky on the back of the PSP, but honestly, I like the UMD drive for games that I own (because unlike most pirates, I actually buy quite a bit of stuff).

64gb of storage though... HOLY PERILOUS PIRATING, BATMAN!!!

Yeah, I don't buy games, so I don't need the UMD drive.

Someone did this mod using the same SD cards. Using blackspeed to test he got 9mb/s read.

You could keep the UMD drive and slap this thing on the back of your slim. It says it's only compatible with the slim, but I'll try it on my fat when I finally get it.

My main motivation for doing this mod is I'm starting a new job soon in which I will have to commute by train everyday for about an hour, opposed to my 10 minute bicycle ride at my current job. With this mod I'll be able to throw on a variety of games and throw video on and not have to worry about compressing it first.

nice find...the only downfall i can see is that you're going to lose compatability for some games once you switch the mode to use without a umd. You can fill your psp with plenty porn now :D

I've actually never had a problem with any games running without a UMD, and I've got 65gb of cso's...

even if your not a pirate you can enjoy this little device. any game you have you can rip and put on your psp. the games even run faster because they dont have to read a disk. ill look into this too. ive almost got my LED trigger mod done so this would be a logical next step.

Updated with pictures...

Anyway, making this internal after doing the trigger mod is probably going to be a pain. You have to totally tear down the psp to do it.

Even though I have a bunch of downloaded games, I'm also using it for music and video. I'll be commuting by train, so this will be perfect. Just think, no more having to downsize videos...

Nice job. Hope it works. I still think it would be sick if you could say put a 128 ssd, on the back of a psp. That would be god worthy.

Definately...i'm sure it could be internalized (<--if thats even a word) easily though. Havent gutted a slim, but i know if the reader on the slims are set up anything similar to the fats then you could just insert it and tuck the ribbon down the side then behind the motherboard.
