My statement about them being just phones isn't an obsolete stance. When you get down to it, they are still phones. The main reason you buy them are for the mobile capabilities. The extras may help you decide on which model to get opposed to another one, but you aren't walking down to the store to buy a mobile gaming device or personal organizer. You're buying a phone. And if none of these things were phones you wouldn't be buying it.
The thing is, a free market is a free market. Companies will do what they will and it's up to the consumer to decide. Buy into Apple's closed market or don't. But obviously the closed market isn't THAT much of an issue if you yourself wants to buy into it...
Yes, not all the apps in the store are gold, but that's what happens in a popular marketplace. Not every item in every store is a knockout product. I'm sure Apple's app store and the android market both have similar sh*t to gold ratios and the app store has a much, MUCH larger number of apps.
Your comment about the OS... personal preference. Again, see free market.
Yes, android is on the rise, but look at how many companies are putting it on phones. Look at how many different phones run it. I just did a rough count of 61 phone models running it (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_An ... martphones
). Of course the market share will increase if you throw it on every phone you can. How many iPhone devices? 4. That means, according to your link, 27% of all smartphone users in America are using 1 of only 4 devices from only 1 manufacturer. Don't know how many of those 61 models I counted were release in the US, but I think 15-20 is a safe guess. Instead of looking at OS market share, MODEL market share is the number that needs to be looked at because that will tell you whether a company is putting out a decent phone.
And again, I hate Apple, but the iPhone was the Jesus-phone in that it saved us from sh*t phones. I've been using Japanese phones on and off since 2005 and have known what it was like using actually useful phones. There was no reason for phones here to suck as much as they did, but we finally had a technological revolution that has finally led us to expect more.
