Choosing a PSP

I have a psp slim with custom firmware on it. my question is this. I want to buy a psp for my kid for christmas but all I can find in the stores are the 3000. Can the 3000 have a custom on it yet or should I buy a slim like mine is?

3000's I believe cannot be downgraded IE no custom firmwares.

Best bet is a 1k or 2k.
