Well you need the actual game to play yes. Savedata is just basically cheating so you don't have to unlock everything in game yourself.

umm

Do you click the 'Remove safely hardware' or w/e it is before you remove it? Or do you just rip it out when you are done with it?
Can your rip it out before it reformats? You might be able to open up some hidden files on the flash drive and delete the FAT flashing files or something.

Any new flash drive shouln't need to be formatted at all. I have 3 differnt types of flash drives and they all work fine with Windows XP and Vista (PC = XP, Laptop came with Vista) and the PS3. Ive had a 60GB and a 40GB both work fine with the flash drives as well. I started at Step #9 and it worked perfect for me.

I also have a Cruzer Micro and because it loads a software that I have not been able to format off of it I am lead to believe that the Cruzer drives can't be used. I did this tutorial with a Memorex Travel drive.

I have a cruzer as well, I have not transferred game saves with it but I have put stuff on my ps3 with it. I can try putting a game save on it later.

No, you won't. Most PS3 games with Trophies don't support downloaded game saves.
